Huia is Mike and Claire Allan; born in Hawkes Bay and the High Country of Canterbury respectively, the countryside is home. Trained in Adelaide and travellers of the world but always rooted in New Zealand. They make wine like they make music — with intrigue and intensity, with an eye to the world but an ear to the ground — constantly searching for, and finding, inspiration in their own backyard, Marlborough. Huia is cups of tea at the kitchen table. A late night jam session with empty wine bottles on the bench and the discarded shells of steamed mussels on a plate. Huia is hens roaming the driveway. A spade leaning against a fence. Huia is the early mornings of harvest. Riddling racks and French cuves. Old methods employed in new ways. Huia is a boat ride in the Sounds. A fishing rod. A singalong, especially to Rory Gallagher or Nick Cave. Huia is returning home at the end of it all to mow the lawns and roam the rows, listening.

“Claire and I were drawn to this place by the incredible fruit flavours that we tasted in the wines of the 1980’s. That and the fact I could build the Hunky Dory, our boat, and spend our down time with a fishing rod in one hand and a whisky in the other, anchored in a quiet bay somewhere in the incredible Marlborough Sounds”

– Mike Allan, Co-Owner & Co-Winemaker.
